Fascinating Memoir from A Music Legend

Eddie Fisher was better-known to my generation as Carrie Fisher's father and "that guy who dumped Debbie Reynolds and ran off with Elizabeth Taylor." I ran across this autobiography in my local library, and it makes for extremely interesting reading.
Eddie bares all.....his marriages and his love affairs (I'm surprised he kept such good track of them, because it's a loooong list), his career highs and lows, his friendships and relationships with other Hollywood legends and his long addiction to drugs and alcohol. He isn't kind to Debbie Reynolds, accusing her of trying to ruin his reputation and career and keeping their children from him, which I found really crass since his account doesn't match those given by not only Debbie but by other people who knew them well. His account of his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor and how he became her nursemaid and keeper seemed rather self-pitying, but his story DOES ring true here when compared to other accounts of their relationship.
Eddie was a legend in the singing world and a star in his own right. The studio system and the manipulations of the recording industry and its agents probably contributed to most of his life mistakes: they practically owned the artist as well as their body of work. His reminiscences are a real eye-opener as well as a tabloid tell-all; he names other actors, singers, directors and political figures (including presidents) who weren't above adventures between the sheets with partners not their spouses, and who depended on recreational stimulants to help their careers along. Eddie's tell-all manages to keep a hair above the sleaze level, with his descriptions of sexual trysts and wild partying. This book is not for puritans or the little old ladies' book club!
Unfortunately Eddie, like so many stars of the film and radio golden age, ended up with little to show for his decades of work. It's shocking to learn about the rip-offs the industry made with no concern for the talent they abused. Stars didn't get the multi-million-dollar fees per film (referred to as "pictures" in that era) that they command now. Most didn't have the right to pick and choose what movies they appeared in, or what songs they sang. The studios and labels made that decision, and the star usually got a flat fee rather than percentages of sales or gross. Entertainers were taken advantage of, as Eddie was by his own personal physician and the friend who helped him get discovered all the time.
This is a great autobiography of a man whose work is largely forgotten today, yet he influenced so many singers who came after him. Well worth a read.
