The Secret Keeper: A Novel, by Kate Morton

England, 1959. Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

Fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and well-regarded actress, living in London. She returns to Green Acres for Dorothy's ninetieth birthday and finds herself overwhelmed by memories and questions she has not thought about for decades. She decides to find out the truth about the events of that summer day and lay to rest her own feelings of guilt. One photograph, of her mother and a woman Laurel has never met, called Vivian, is her first clue.

The Secret Keeper explores longings and dreams, the lengths some people go to fulfill them, and the strange consequences they sometimes have. It is a story of lovers, friends, dreamers and schemers, play-acting and deception, told against a backdrop of events that changed the world.

I listened on CD and I'm happy to say the narrator for this book is excellent
By Bobbie Redington
Our book club host for July selected this book. I was not familiar with the book or the author. I listened on CD and I'm happy to say the narrator for this book is excellent. The story was wonderful with a well rounded cast of characters, each allowed to develop and unfold at just the right pace and each with their own history which I felt was so important to the story. The secret itself was not without a twist towards the end which came at just the right time. I felt the story was completely told without short cuts or overly long explanations. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and as a result have ordered two more books (CD's) by this same author.

Very heavy and depressing
By Daisy
I was excited to see this in my local B&N and find for less on Amazon :O). Sadly though, I couldn't finish it and ended up skipping to the end. I found it to be quite predictable and I knew exactly where the author was taking us. I just couldn't keep going. I found it to be overly tragic and foreboding with no silver lining whatsover. I don't need a "rainbows and sunshine" ending, but this was just SO depressing and tragic to me that I knew I'd get really down if I kept going. It was kind of like watching a horrific car accident that you just know is going to end badly but there's nothing you can do to stop it. And you can't take your eyes off it. Thankfully I was able to!

I'm pretty sensitive and I have to be careful with what I read and watch, as it can really affect me. That may sound silly, but this author is super talented and she can take you to low places! I'm a big fan of "A Forgotten Garden" and I really recommend that. I've read this, "The Darkest Hours", and "A Forgotten Garden", and I can only really recommend the latter. I will however continue to try and read more from this author and recommend her!

The mystery of a decades-old secret
By D. Youssef
Powerful, wonderful, fantastic. Loved the writing, the characters, the story, the underlying mystery that takes place in this historical novel set in pre-WWII England through the blitz to the 50s, 60s and 2011. In 1961 16-year-old Laurel watches a stranger come up the long drive to the house. He talks to her mother, and Laurel sees her mother kill him with the birthday cake knife in her hand. Self-defense? The mystery of who the man was and how he knew her mother's name haunts Laurel and decades later Laurel sets out to discover her mother's secret.
