"It's All About the Music!"

Welcome to another in the Legends of Rock & Roll series.

This is, like the others, a mini-biography of one the greatest performers in the music world. This is the third of a series within a series covering the four members of, arguably, the greatest group in music history, The Beatles. I've already covered John Lennon and Paul McCartney, this one is about George Harrison.

This book is not about the Beatles.

While I know that you can’t write about George Harrison without considering the Beatles, the emphasis of this book is not the Beatles, but instead, the life and music of George Harrison as an individual and as a solo performer.

In this particular volume, like before, I will discuss George’s early life and his joining up with three other lads to create what is probably the greatest rock and roll group in the history of the world.

But it all ended at one point and George had a solo career after the Beatles broke up that continued to his death in 2001.

Come with me for a walk down memory lane as I review the life of George Harrison, and especially, the music that he produced. We'll visit each of his hits and find out how they came to be written or how they were recorded; and discuss any trivia that might be associated with the music. This book is about the man but even more importantly, it's about the music. This series is my way of honoring the people that have brought so much joy to our lives over the years.

It is an unauthorized fan tribute.

The Chapters include:

Introduction - A general introduction and a kick-off for the book.
Early Days - A brief summary of his life before the music started.
On to the Beatles - How did George meet the other guys and become part of the supergroup?
Patti Boyd - George meets his first wife and convinces her to marry him.
The Music of India - George gets introduced to the music that would influence the rest of his life.
Songs Written by George Harrison - George wrote some wonderful songs while still a Beatle. I talk about three.
Things Begin to Fall Apart - What was it that caused the band to unravel and finally break up?
Going Solo - The break finally comes and George strikes out on his own.
"My Sweet Lord" - the story of what is, perhaps, George's biggest hit and the controversy surrounding it.
The Concert for Bangladesh - The famous concert to raise money for the stricken country of Bangladesh.
"Living in the Material World" - His new album and the struggle to weigh fame against his new found Hindu religion.
"Dark Horse" - His first marriage ends and he releases his next album.
Months of Depression - Times are tough. George comes close to a nervous breakdown.
"Thirty Three & 1/3" - The music continues.
Olivia Trinidad Arias - George meets and marries his second wife, Olivia.
Handmade Films - George starts a film production company. What are some of the famous films he produced?
The Eighties - Things are slowing down as music tastes change and George has trouble keeping up with the times.
"Cloud Nine" - After a hiatus of five years, George comes back with a fresh sound and a great new album.
The Traveling Wilburys - George and four other superstars of the Eighties create a truly new supergroup.
Beatles Anthology - George, Paul and Ringo work on the ultimate set of Beatles music and history.
A Second Beatle is Gone - The events and illness that lead up to the untimely death of George Harrison.
After His Death - A tribute to a great performer and writer.
Legacy of George Harrison - Every Legends book has a Legacy section where we review the awards and contributions of the artist.
Afterword - My closing thoughts.
Selected Discography - A list of the major albums and singles by George Harrison.

Great inspirational musical epiphany and slice of history
By Bman11
A fun tribute to these legendary musicians, I read this book after reading the authors other books on the Beatles like Ringo Star. The author presents some insightful history and stories about these rock n roll heroes.

As a musician myself I love learning about great artists and their story and inspiration.

I particularly liked the story of George's epiphany while riding his bike a age 12 when he decided to devote his life to music after hearing "heart break hotel" by Elvis Presley.

I would definitely recommend this book for music lovers and everyone wanting to learn more about rock n roll and the music industry.

Short and not too sweet (or accurate)
By Thomas R. Clarke
Before reading Mr. Hoag's book about George Harrison I wondered how he was able to research and write so many other books in his legends series. After reading this one I understand. It is very short and mostly superficial, and in some areas inaccurate. It's actually more like a magazine article that reads like a Junior High School report.

I will give Mr. Hoag credit in one area however. He did a pretty good job of laying out Harrison's discography. He makes mention of each solo album George made, with a few comments on each one. It is in the early going of this article that Mr. Hoag's Beatle knowledge and research fall short.

A minor but obvious mistake occurs when Mr. Hoag states that George was 17 when he was invited to join The Quarrymen, Lennon's band, in 1958. George was born in 1943, making him 15 in 1958.

Mr. Hoag states that George worked as an apprentice electrician, "until The Quarrymen got their first major paying gig", implying the guys were making enough money to live on at that point. The Quarrymen never made any significant money and there were no "major paying gigs." The band struggled to survive long after The Quarrymen name was dropped and they continued that struggle as The Beatles. This is basic Beatles History that Mr. Hoag seems unaware of.

Philip Norman's book, "Shout! The Beatles in Their Generation", gives a fascinating and very informative look those early Quarrymen days. Unfortunately Mr. Hoag skims over it in a paragraph or two.

Mr. Hoag makes quite a mess of the next section as he describes The Beatles first trip to Hamburg, Germany. Allan Williams was their quasi manager at the time and did make arrangements for that trip. "Williams signed The Quarrymen to a contract and sent them to Germany". They were The Beatles (and had been for some time) by this point, not The Quarrymen. Also, Williams went with them on this trip, they weren't "sent". Beatles 101. The Beatles did not start their job in Hamburg at the Kaiserkeller Club as Mr. Hoag states. William's contact in Germany was in fact Bruno Koschmider, who operated several night clubs in Hamburg's infamous red light district. The Beatles initially thought they would be playing at Koschmider's Kaiserkeller Club, a fairly respectable place considering the area. But that is not what Bruno had in mind. He needed a band for his dive called The Indra; a seedy rundown joint frequented by hookers and intoxicated sailors. The Beatles started their adventure there. This was The Beatles introduction to international entertainment, the first time away from home for all of them.
According to Mr. Hoag George wasn't allowed to play in Hamburg on this trip due to his age. While it's true that George was still a minor (age 17) upon arrival in Germany, he did play in The Indra for a time until he was deported due to an incident concerning a small fire in their quarters. Read great details on this in Norman's book.

Things really get dicey when Mr. Hoag broaches the topic of Beatles manager Brian Epstein. "The first thing he did was fire Pete Best and hired a new drummer that nobody had heard of, Ringo Starr" states Mr. Hoag. As The Beatles manager Epstein probably was assigned the task of giving Best the sad news that he was out, but exactly how the whole thing came down is one of the great mysteries in Beatle History. Theories abound and even Pete Best isn't sure why he was let go, but none of the suppositions ever mention Epstein. (See Pete's excellent book "Beatle! The Pete Best Story") As for Epstein hiring a new drummer that no one had heard of, Ringo was a well known Liverpool drummer and a friend of the Beatles long before he was hired. He was in a band fronted by Rory Storm (Rory Storm and The Hurricanes) who vied with the Beatles to be the number one band in Liverpool. The Hurricanes were playing the Hamburg clubs at the same time as the Beatles and Ringo sat in with the Beatles to cover for an absent Pete Best more than once.

I noticed a number of other inaccuracies that I won't go on about, but I think you get the idea. Like his article, Mr.Hoag's knowledge of the Beatles is superficial and not very accurate.

This article can be used to scan the list of George's albums and not much else.

Other good sources of Beatle info are, "The Beatles" by Hunter Davies, "The Beatles Anthology" by The Beatles, and "Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now" to name a few.

Love the Beatles, Again
By Nancy Hendrickson
I read and reviewed an early book by this author on John Lennon, so was curious to see what he wrote about Lennon's Beatle-mate George Harrison. I easily connected with the author's take on George as we share a love of some of Harrison's beautiful songs like My Guitar Gently Weeps.Like the Lennon book, this book takes readers from Harrison's early childhood in Liverpool through his first guitar purchase (3 pounds), and how he knew McCartney at school and how he joined Lennon's Quarrymen. In reading the Beatles years, it's amazing the Fab Four ever had any time to rest, recuperate and simply be - as they had a grueling schedule. If you're a Beatles fan, pick up this book - it's an easy, quick read and you'll learn a lot of details about her favorite Beatle that you probably didn't know before.
