The work opens with a critical review of developments in Protestant and Catholic Theology since the Reformation which have led to the steady neglect of aesthetics in Christian theology. From here, von Balthasar turns to the central theme of the volume: the question of theological knowledge. He re-examines the nature of Christian believing (here he quickly draws widely on such theological figures as Anselm, Pascal and Newman) which gives due place to the particular kind of 'knowing' which develops within the personal relationship to the believer to the God mediated through the revelation-form of Jesus Christ.

Solid but flawed Catholic theology
By Greg
In this massive series of theological writings, Catholic theologian Hans von Balthasar seeks to establish the primacy of the transcendentals (attributes of being or existence shared by God and creatures), particularly the 'Beautiful', to Christian theology.
In a very complex and winding road, Balthasar starts by focusing on the concept of 'glory', one of God's primary attributes, as mentioned in the sacred scriptures (OT and NT). In his later works, he looks at 'glory' and 'beauty' as present in the writings of church fathers like Anselm and Augustine, in the meditations of philosophers like Plato and Plotinus, in the mystical thought of mystics such as Eckhart and John of the Cross, and in the poetic works of Dante, Hopkins and George Bernanos.
Balthasar's work (and the companion work Theo-Drama) is sprawling in ambition and scope, and reminds one of the speculative schemas of Hegel, Schelling, or Schopenhauer in trying to grasp huge segments in reality in one sweep. Despite the great intellectual depth and power of Balthasar's mind, and his startling insights that are often placed in movingly beautiful prose (i.e. his remarks on Plotinus), the reader can't help but feel at times Balthasar is too uncritical and too speculative in his theology to be taken very seriously. His extensive use of German idealistic thought as the conceptual framework for his theology is particularly questionable, as is his selective neglect of important 20th century philosophers, as well as thinkers from the more empirical and historical traditions in Western thought. In summary one gets the impression Balthasar is wildly ambitious in his theology but fails to achieve even a small fraction of what he sets out to do.
Another problem with Balthasar is his lack of balance, particularly in accepting the strange 'revelations' of Swiss mystic Adrienne von Speyr. Balthasar seemed to see in this woman (who he acted as for as a spiritual director) profound insights into the mystery of God on the same level or even exceeding those of saints such as Teresa of Avila or Therese of Lisieux. The lack of critical thinking apparent in Balthasar's acceptance of this woman's 'revelations' and lack of objectivity as a director are most apparent here, and remind one of the excesses around fringe Catholic movements devoted to charismatic figures who claim to work miracles, receive 'messages' from Mary and the saints, or see bizarre visions and phenomena they claim bind the whole church beyond the church's public deposit of doctrine. It is an unfortunate lapse in the otherwise brilliant mind of such a great theologian that upsets his works, including this one.
Balthasar clearly deserves credit for rehabilitating beauty and other transcendentals (truth, goodness, wisdom, etc) as a core concern for Christian theology. But his work is marred by the weaknesses and biases described above, as well as his somewhat uncritical approach and incorporation of elements of tradition. Because of this his work in my view is lesser in quality than that of more historically minded, empirical theologians like Lonergan and Karl Rahner, who do a much better job of taking 20th century philosophy, science and logic into account and remoulding Catholic theology into a form that is credible for a scientific age. Balthasar's approach is more poetic, romantic and literary, and belongs more in the 19th century than the 21st, and is perhaps more pleasurable to read from this perspective than one of solid rigor.
