Foundational

This is a great book for beginners, and it can also serve as a reference companion for those who are at the early intermediate level of knowledge in bodybuilding (and general weightlifting). The book has its strengths and weaknesses, but, for those people I have just specified, the book can be invaluable as a foundation of knowledge. I was very fortunate to have purchased this book when I first started lifting, and so it has some nostalgic value to me, too. I also recommend the book to people who are interested in Arnold Schwarzenegger, in general, because I think it goes beyond a documentary like “Pumping Iron,” in the sense that it fills some of Arnold’s ideas about lifting, nutrition, what health is, and broader philosophy. I would be surprised if biographers of Arnold, for example, have not read his encyclopedia.
I think people reading this review will be more interested in what it provide as a foundation of knowledge, so I will start with that; then, I will hit its weaknesses and limitations. If there is anything that is particularly strong about this encyclopedic presentation it is the emphasis on motions in association to muscle anatomy, and pointing out why these motions are performed, the ideas behind how muscles respond to the training, and the emphasis on variation of speeds of repetitions, kinds of muscle contraction, etc. Arnold also brings some clarity to the Weider lifting principles, providing some understanding to how it is that they work, though he often refers to the principles without pointing out that they are the so-called “Weider Principles.” The book also gives a nice set of dietary guidelines that is based on the macronutrient view of nutrition. Finally, the actual exercises, exercise strategies (e.g., supersets), exercise advice (e.g., types of stretches and repercussions of not stretching), and perspective will carry all newcomers very, very far. Many will not need more than this encyclopedia (e.g., competitive bikers seeking a competitive edge through minor upper body strength increase, or someone who performs aerobics and wants an extra boost in fat burning from a little muscle mass increase).
The weaknesses of the book, despite the higher regard and 5-star review I give it, are numerous. This is as much a result of Arnold’s dated knowledge as it is limitations in the advancement of exercise and nutrition science. For instance, the macronutrient approach, which is very good for those already in a healthy state seeking further physical fitness, simply doesn’t admit the effectiveness of much more nuanced approaches. On example of the nutrition aspect is evolutionary dietary perspectives, and another is the research done on the major difference between subcategories of fats (long vs. short chain fats), such as the difference between fats found in fried foods versus those found in fish, and glycemic impact of carbohydrates, such as a comparison between the low glycemic impact of quinoa versus the higher impact of breads. On the exercise front, many lifting concepts advanced by West Side Barbell Club or Pavel (and his complexes) are not entailed. Again, these are more advanced, and one certainly does not lose much from not having these in this book, save those who are competitive athletes or those who have something like a metabolic illness who seek health and fitness.
Overall, the book is invaluable to all of those who have read less than 3-5 books and 2 dozen lifting magazines, and very, very useful to those who have read 5-10 books and 3-4 dozen magazines. I began using this book in middle school, just as I began wrestling, and the effects were felt. I continued to use this book through high school. I also recommend this book to college friends who had begun lifting, and they claimed it was an enormous help in getting started. I even recommend advanced lifters to skim through it, because sometimes Arnold provides understanding to things that we sometimes accept dogmatically, and he has a number of rare exercises include that may find some use in advance lifting routines.
