From Kirkus Reviews
In a compelling debut memoir, Larkin tells of her experiences in the Children of God cult.

Growing up in the Bible Belt in the 1970s, Larkin was drawn to Christianity at a young age. However, her mother always actively discouraged her from joining a church and leading a religious life. When her mother finally took her to a church, Larkin found herself dissatisfied: “The people were nice to me, but they didn’t talk much about the Lord. They seemed more interested in talking about what was right and wrong—not a whole lot different than my mother.” Lost and despondent, the 13-year-old Larkin happened upon a poster in the nearby college town of Knoxville, Tenn., that read, “Free Food, Free Music, Free Love.” Larkin took the ad as a sign from God and went to the listed address, where she was greeted by the seemingly warm and generous members of the Children of God, also known as the Family. Larkin joined them and eagerly relinquished all her possessions to the group. The Family’s regular proselytizing, or “witnessing,” consisted at first of distributing leaflets and singing on street corners, but then began incorporating “Flirty Fishing,” in which female members persuaded outsiders to join the Family by flirting and eventually sleeping, with them. Larkin’s spiritual journey takes another unexpected turn when she gives birth to a daughter, Berta, with cerebral palsy. Her challenges as she tried to raise Berta in the Family—where no one member is allowed to receive special treatment—led Larkin to see her life in the Children of God as unsustainable and detrimental to her and her daughter’s well-being. In this fine memoir, the author’s voice is emotional and fervent, but her prose style is relatively unadorned. She conveys her story in simple but powerful language which consistently makes her account an absorbing read.

A captivating story of one woman’s journey to spiritual freedom.

Both Leigh and her daughter continue to experience phenomenal on-going healing in multiple realms of the body, the mind, and the spirit, and live with undaunted conviction that the BEST is most definitely, YET TO COME!

A gripping read
By Billie
This was a gripping true account of an idealistic yet unfulfilled teenager who is smitten with the Children of God and their promises of a society free from materialism and imbued with the love of God. It is fascinating to watch how this vision is gradually corrupted with the introduction of bizarre concepts such as "Flirty Fishing" - namely the use of sexual favours to recruit converts and open their hearts (and wallets) to "the truth".

I feel that books like this are important because they give a powerful voice to cult victims, especially the children that were commonly neglected, abuse and left largely "un-parented", who need support in putting their lives back together. I applaud the author for ultimately putting the special needs of her little girl first and leaving the cult in order to seek treatment. I was frustrated that the author stayed so long in such an abusive environment. The fact that she was constantly asking for permission to do things that were within her normal rights as an adult (eg. going to Hawaii to visit her mother, taking her daughter to a doctor) was a telling indicator of the power of mind control.

Thanks for a great read and for your bravery in telling your story. I would love to read a sequel about how you and your family are going now - as well as some more reflection on life as a soldier in the Children of God.

This book is a gem!
By Jasmine L Jones
I really enjoyed this book. It's a beautiful reminder of God's promise in Romans 8:28-29 that He will work all things to the good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. This book helped me further in my understanding of what makes cults so appealing and it also issues the challenge to those of the Body to make sure we're walking the walk and not just talking the talk. I'm so happy that Ms. Larkin has found true wholeness in Christ and that she is using her experiences to go back and help others.

An Overcomer's Story
By DC Miles
Ms. Larkin's story of a desperate search for Jesus and how unimaginably tying circumstances brought her straight to His heart, struck a cord in mine.

Her first hand account of being wooed, fooled, taken advantage of and, eventually, deserted by a cult is heart rending.

A recommended read for anyone whose ever asked "after all I've been through...can Jesus still use me?"
