Beautiful book, great recipes!

I am forever cooking and I have a lot for reading cookery books as well but strangely enough till now I had never bought a book by Nigella, maybe because when I want one of her recipes usually I go online and print it. Now I don't have a printer I decided to buy this book. Like Nigella I also believe that food doesn't need to be difficult to prepare and take loads of time in order to have a smashing meal on the table. As a matter of fact often are the most simple dishes that make everybody rave about them. I fully enjoyed reading this book (there are a few recipes that are maybe a tad too simple for my taste) and now I have tried a few of them I can testify that this is a great addition to my culinary library.

Yesterday evening I tried the “Mustard Caper Sauce for Broccoli” and it was simply delicious. It will also go very well with other vegetables like any greens, carrots, etc. Like Nigella suggests I tried it out as a side dish with the “Turkey Fillets with Anchovy, Gherkin and Dill” but I didn’t think that it was a great combination, too many strong flavours for my taste and I will try the main dish with maybe some pork instead of the turkey filets which are too dry for my taste and taste better breaded. I also loved the “Scallops and Chorizo” which go very well together with the “Chickpeas with Rocket and Sherry”, a dish I made years ago after seeing Nigella making it on TV and which I had to try again as soon as I bought this book. Tonight I am going to try another recipe.

I was surprised thought that Nigella cuts the fat from the pork chops before cooking. It is known that if you want to cut it off (which I actually don’t) you should do it after you have cooked the meat as most of the taste is in the fat. She also uses lettuce in a bag but after watching a programme on TV where they said that we are actually eating a lot of chlorine and other chemicals I now prefer to avoid them. I found it interesting that she says that seafood is traditionally eat on Christmas Eve in much of Continental Europe but… to be honest, although I come from there and have lived in a few countries I have never heard of such a tradition.

PS - The measurements are only in metric!

I am sure that this is a book I will thoroughly enjoy: I love Nigella’s style, the book is well organized by chapters according to the occasion, most recipes are easy but not so basic that you can’t present them to your guests all recipes come with photos of beautiful quality so what is there not to love? The introduction to the recipes is also very useful as Nigella gives the read tips and advice, more cookery books should have such introductions!

I think these are the best written stories in his body of work, perhaps not as canonical as Cthulu and all, but evocative of the same sort of celestial terror behind our puny lives. And the adventures in the dream lands fun for the reader and perhaps easier than when the weirdness is in our world.

Night-Gaunts and White Ships and Silver Keys

H.P. Lovecraft is best known for his horror stories, especially his Cthulhu mythos tales. But earlier in his career, he wrote a number of Dunsanian dream fantasies. While they sometimes had horrific elements, these stories aimed more for the exotic than the terrifying. Perhaps the best known of Lovecraft's dream tales is a 38,000 word novel called _The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath_ that he wrote around 1926. Lovecraft was dissatisfied with the novel, and he never submitted it for publication. It appeared posthumously in the forties-- first in a little magazine called _The Arkham Sampler_, then in the collection _Beyond the Wall of Sleep_ (1943). (For reasons best known to God, Dorothy McIlwraith at _Weird Tales_ rejected it.)

In 1970, Lin Carter assembled the "Dream-Quest" with five other dream stories by Lovecraft. Three of the stories are Randolph Carter tales: "Dream-Quest," "The Silver Key," and "Through the Gates of the Silver Key". The three other stories are "Celephais," "The White Ship," and "The Strange High House in the Mist". The Ballantine edition also contains a lovely cover by Gervasio Gallardo and an informative introduction by Lin Carter.

Let us start with the novel. I think that it is fair to say that it is considerably better than Lovecraft believed. There is a richness of imagination and occasional flashes of poetry that carry the reader along. We read of the cats who can leap to the far side of the Moon, black ships with unseen rowers, merchants with wide smiles and two suspicious bumps on their foreheads under their turbans, a city under crystal waters of the sea, a trapdoor with an iron ring in the middle of a forest, a zebra thethered to a curious pillar, the carven face of a haughty god perched high on a mountain ledge, the cold and rubbery night-gaunts... and more. Much more.

But the best dream novels-- like the _Alice_ books or George MacDonald's _Lilith_ --have plots. Mind you, the logic may not be the same as that of a realistic novel, but a structure is there. _The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath_ doesn't have much of a plot. One incident simply follows another until the novel is brought to an abrupt close. And while there are portions of the novel that are poetic, there are also portions in with Lovecraft falls back on vague adjectives like "blasphemous," "unspeakable," and "unnameable" for his effects. So-- we have an interesting but flawed novel that is certainly more pleasant to read than many of Lovecraft's horror stories.

"The Silver Key" is an account about what happens to Randolph Carter after he loses the ability to dream. The story hints that he recovers it with the silver key. Carter, heavily modeled on Lovecraft, is portrayed as creative, intelligent, and sensitive. Characters who want Carter to spend a certain amount of time in the real world are portrayed as conventional, stupid, and boorish. Having dealt with a certain number of people like Carter who retreat into dream worlds while other people do their work for them, this story leaves me cold. "Through the Gates of the Silver Key" is a long sequel written in collaboration with E. Hoffman Price. It is much superior to the first story.

"The Dream-Quest" contains several allusions to other Lovecraft stories. There are a couple of nods to the central character in "Pickman's Model". There is a reference to a "tall lighthouse, silent and alien" (15) that _could_ be the lighthouse in "The White Ship". And there are numerous references to the exotic port city of Celephais.

Both "The Strange High House in the Mist" and "The White Ship" are effective tales of heroes who venture into exotic realms and who manage to return-- but not unchanged. "Celephais" has some effective descriptive passages, but it suffers from another hero who is Too Good For This World.

All in all, an old-fashioned fantasy collection of some charm. In honor of HPL, settle down in a plush chair with a bowl of ice cream by your side, a sagacious cat curled up in your lap, and the book in your hand. Ready? Slowly peruse.

It was a fever of the gods

H.P. Lovecraft was a gentleman and a true artist - the stories released under his name are works of his singular genius, unbending to commercial pressures. The revisions and ghost-writing he did to supplement his income were never throwaway pulp tripe, but chances seized upon by the author to test out and perfect his trademark blend of horror and wonder in the face of an infinite cosmos.

One piece stands out among his work, and that is The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. It was done as a personal exercise and was only released posthumously - never even formally typed in the author's own lifetime. He was concerned it was so singular and out-of-the-ordinary in his field of weird fiction that it wouldn't be well-received and thus he never submitted it to a publisher. Fortunately for the world, it was lovingly transcribed by his associates and released for all to enjoy.

It is certainly the most personal of his works - his recurring character Randolph Carter is the star, and Mr. Carter is the closest thing to an alter-ego among Lovecraft's gallery of literary creations. By day he is just another man (revealed in other stories to be a writer of weird fiction as was his creator), but by night he is a master dreamer privy to realms of the collective unconscious unknown to the average traveller of Hypnos' domain. As haunting dreams of beauty trouble him, Carter sets out on a quest to find a fabled city of the gods of which Fate has cursed him with tantalizing visions. This takes him deep into the Dreamlands, a fantastic and wondrous realm where civilizations of the primitive and the classical reside in staggering landscapes of beauty and dread. He takes on the will of the blind and dangerous Outer Gods as he seeks to attain a privilege of the gods that few mortals have attempted, and in the course of his trek he finds himself adrift at sea, taken to the moon, battling alongside feline hordes, and in the clutches of darkest cosmic force.

The diction is wordy and dense, done both as a tribute to Lovecraft's beloved Lord Dunsany and as an exercise of the unparalled vocabulary that marks Lovecraft's work. This lofty prose works well to bolser the otherworldly, epic feel of the work. No apologies are made to the audience regarding the fantastic setting, and the audience is tantalized with some details and left to speculate on others concerning the background of the world Randolph Carter tranverses. It is the Dreamlands, after all - and Lovecraft provides elusive and mesmerizing revelations to inspire his audience to bring the land to life in their own dreams.

Ultimately, the book is a thrilling read equal parts breathless fantasy, unrelenting adventure, and dawning horror. Any fan of Lovecraft's other work will find this book indispensable, and fans of the epic work of Edgar Rice Burroughs, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, or Lovecraft-inspired modern icon Neil Gaiman will thrill to this tale of dreams sought and hopes attained.

Any scholar of Lovecraft's biography will be moved at the contents of the final paragraph, where the mask of Carter slips and we see Lovecraft recalling the dreams of his own life which always remained just out of reach. To understand Lovecraft, and to experience a world of fantasy and horror unlike any other in print, one must do himself or herself the favor of taking the Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.

The Vjictorian Mystery Megapack: 27 Classic Mystery Tales

I chose "The Victorian Mystery Megapack:27 Classic Mlystery Tales" because the title intrigued me. I have thoroughly relished reading Victorian mysteries in the past and was certain this series had to be enjoyable. Sure enough, I look forward to continuing to read every time I pick up my Kindle. I was pleasantly surprised to read mysteries of that era in which a female detective solves the "problems." Can you imagine that! A female private detective in a ball gown, who leaves a ball to assist a prominent set of gentlemen in finding a disappeared vital paper (Shades of Sherlock [or should I say Shirley] Holmes). I have not read the entire series, only about a half dozen tales so far. I don't want to finish this too quickly. If you enjoy British period mysteries, this is a fine set. Enjoy!

Interesting Look into the Mystery Syle of the 1800s

When reviewing an anthology one enters quandarous territory as to the number of Stars that should be given since some stories are heavy and ponderous and others, such as those of Israel Zongwill, are witty and humerous (reminiscent of the works of Mark Twain) with an unsolvable mystery thrown in, which will defeat even the most astute of mystery novel readers until the final chapter and even then a final O. Henryish twist completes the engaging work by Mr. Zongwill filled with interesting characters, witty dialogue and a delve into the atmospheres of late 19th century London with its cast of characters of rival police detectives, reporters, unionists, landladies, ersatz poets and the myriad and sundry people and events of a time long gone by but still relevant to the modern world for, as is often said, "The more things change the more they stay the same" a sentiment to which one can have sympathy after reading these tales written in a gone by era, some of which, as I said, are a joy to read and others are of too heavy and ponderous a style for the modern reader but never-the-less the inclusion of which should not detract from a five Star rating that many of the finer stories have earned for the volume.

Now, if you have managed to read through the above 215 word sentence, you are ready for the style of many 19th century authors. Since many periodicals of the time paid by the line, (often only a penny a line) one can't fault the writers for sacrificing clarity and brevity for obfuscation and elongation in pursuit of pelf.

I have mentioned Mr. Zongwill's novella, "The Big Bow Mystery". It is a classic murder mystery of the type in which a man has been murdered in a room of which all the doors and windows have been locked from the inside. More that a good mystery, it is written in a tongue and cheek vein which is quite entertaining.

Most of the other short stories were of varying interest, some with intriguing mysteries and some without. The three stories by Charles Dickens were not all murder mysteries and even then were of of a rather simplistic type.

Of the two full length novels, I need say nothing concerning "The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. One can assume that most people would be familiar with that fine classic. The other included novel, "The Moonstone" by Wilkie Collins is a masterpiece. The story of the theft (or was it just a misplacement?) of the fabled Moonstone diamond is told in the form of reports written by individuals who were party to the disappearance of the valuable gem. The reports are given in chronological order so the story flows well. It is interesting to see how the author alters the manner of writing for each individual. I'm sure the author had a fine time writing the report as given in the style Miss Drusilla Clack (spinster) a woman of high moral character who faced the world with a bag of tracts on morality and only awaited a chance to distribute them to people in need of enlightenment. To wit:

"I paid the cabman exactly his fare. He received it with an oath; upon which I instantly gave him a tract. If I had presented a pistol at his head, this abandoned wretch could hardly have exhibited greater consternation. He jumped up on his box, and, with profane exclamations of dismay, drove off furiously. Quite useless, I am happy to say! I sowed the good seed, in spite of him, by throwing a second tract in the window of his cab."

The Moonstone and So Much More

If you are considering an ebooks copy of Wilkie Collins' justly classic THE MOONSTONE, you can't do much better than this edition, set as it is in the context of lots and lots more excellent period reading. Here are offerings from that unjustly obscure founding mother of the modern mystery genre Anna Katharine Green, Conan Doyle's often-dramatized HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, and a rare sprinkling of short stories including two of my own favorite gems, "The Burglar's Story," by W. S. Gilbert -- which should delight most Savoyards -- and "A Jury of Her Peers," by Susan Glaspell, which should delight most feminists and might in itself be worth the price of purchase.
Along with Poe's "Purloined Letter," several of these selections provide evidence that in earlier days of the genre, the mystery did NOT always and invariably require murder, but might on occasion hinge on theft or some other puzzle, without a death in sight.
One or two of the additional short stories struck me as a bit negligible, and the analytical side of my brain would have appreciated seeing date of original publication and/or composition when known. Nevertheless, for pure, solid storytelling, it is still hard to beat the Victorians at their best.
