The book is not written well. He really needs an editor.....but the ideas are working. I really hated the advice, yet was desperate to fix this problem in my 12 year marriage. After having children my husband lost interest and could only see me as "mommy". He's a great father and good friend but not a lover. This has hurt me for years. I followed the advice to a T! It took bout a month for my husband to notice changes. I bought new sexy undergarments but NEVER asked how they looked, just got dressed as normal. Starting exercising without asking how I looked, not once. Just did it for myself. Started dressing better and wearing a light perfume. Fixed my hair and makeup. I did not beg for attention or ever asked "do I look nice". Just went about my life and ignored my husband more than usual. Threw a dinner party for our friends and lightly flirted, told funny stories was the perfect hostess. .Well he is noticing. He Bought me very nice Christmas presents. So not like him. He's actually coming on to me! THAT hasn't happened since before our two children were born. We will see how this story unfolds.

Excellent book!

Okay, so there are some editing issues, repeated paragraphs etc. But, this book is still probably the best one I have read on the subject, and believe me, I have read A LOT of them- including The Sex-Starved Wife,He's Just Not Up for It Anymore,The Sexless Marriage Cure,How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, and many, many others.
This one gave me so many "A-ha!" moments, and I found myself actually laughing out loud at times, as I read it. I really truly feel hopeful that the "action plan" outlined in the book is going to help tremendously. Yes, part of this advice is to make some appearance changes- but it's not one of those "lose weight, put on some sexy clothes and then your husband will notice you" kind of deals- it's more about changing his perception of you that he has gotten used to. And there are so many more gems in this book- such as recognizing that all the little things we do to try and get attention and make our husbands interested are in actuality, putting more pressure on them (this one really made me stop and think). I feel like I really understand things from his perspective now- where before, I was more focused on my unmet needs, and how selfish I thought he was being, and doing things like trying to plan romantic dates, sending sexy texts, getting angry and moody, lavishing attention on him etc- all these things were only heaping more pressure on him (and stressing me out more!). I actually no longer feel like a victim- and sort of look forward to putting this plan in action!

This is a great book for beginners, and it can also serve as a reference companion for those who are at the early intermediate level of knowledge in bodybuilding (and general weightlifting). The book has its strengths and weaknesses, but, for those people I have just specified, the book can be invaluable as a foundation of knowledge. I was very fortunate to have purchased this book when I first started lifting, and so it has some nostalgic value to me, too. I also recommend the book to people who are interested in Arnold Schwarzenegger, in general, because I think it goes beyond a documentary like “Pumping Iron,” in the sense that it fills some of Arnold’s ideas about lifting, nutrition, what health is, and broader philosophy. I would be surprised if biographers of Arnold, for example, have not read his encyclopedia.

I think people reading this review will be more interested in what it provide as a foundation of knowledge, so I will start with that; then, I will hit its weaknesses and limitations. If there is anything that is particularly strong about this encyclopedic presentation it is the emphasis on motions in association to muscle anatomy, and pointing out why these motions are performed, the ideas behind how muscles respond to the training, and the emphasis on variation of speeds of repetitions, kinds of muscle contraction, etc. Arnold also brings some clarity to the Weider lifting principles, providing some understanding to how it is that they work, though he often refers to the principles without pointing out that they are the so-called “Weider Principles.” The book also gives a nice set of dietary guidelines that is based on the macronutrient view of nutrition. Finally, the actual exercises, exercise strategies (e.g., supersets), exercise advice (e.g., types of stretches and repercussions of not stretching), and perspective will carry all newcomers very, very far. Many will not need more than this encyclopedia (e.g., competitive bikers seeking a competitive edge through minor upper body strength increase, or someone who performs aerobics and wants an extra boost in fat burning from a little muscle mass increase).

The weaknesses of the book, despite the higher regard and 5-star review I give it, are numerous. This is as much a result of Arnold’s dated knowledge as it is limitations in the advancement of exercise and nutrition science. For instance, the macronutrient approach, which is very good for those already in a healthy state seeking further physical fitness, simply doesn’t admit the effectiveness of much more nuanced approaches. On example of the nutrition aspect is evolutionary dietary perspectives, and another is the research done on the major difference between subcategories of fats (long vs. short chain fats), such as the difference between fats found in fried foods versus those found in fish, and glycemic impact of carbohydrates, such as a comparison between the low glycemic impact of quinoa versus the higher impact of breads. On the exercise front, many lifting concepts advanced by West Side Barbell Club or Pavel (and his complexes) are not entailed. Again, these are more advanced, and one certainly does not lose much from not having these in this book, save those who are competitive athletes or those who have something like a metabolic illness who seek health and fitness.

Overall, the book is invaluable to all of those who have read less than 3-5 books and 2 dozen lifting magazines, and very, very useful to those who have read 5-10 books and 3-4 dozen magazines. I began using this book in middle school, just as I began wrestling, and the effects were felt. I continued to use this book through high school. I also recommend this book to college friends who had begun lifting, and they claimed it was an enormous help in getting started. I even recommend advanced lifters to skim through it, because sometimes Arnold provides understanding to things that we sometimes accept dogmatically, and he has a number of rare exercises include that may find some use in advance lifting routines.

Fascinating book, a treasured reference for anyone interested in body language

I bought this book a while back and found it be one of the most comprehensive of its kind. It has a respected space on my bookshelf. It covers other cultures as well as many human signals that one might not think about, like submissive , cut-off, and displacement signals. There's so many in this book!!

Did you know that if a man's face turns red during a confrontation, he's probably less dangerous as a man's face that turns pale, since the blood is being moved to the muscles prepping them for physical action? I didn't read the whole book yet, but I've gotten through many chapters and found it absolutely fascinating! I took an animal behavior course in college and this definitely tops it as it actually has theoretical relevance to humans.
Desmond Morris does it again with this brilliant book !

Not what I was looking for

This book was not what I was looking for. Morris mostly just goes through different general categories of gestures without going into much detail on what a specific gesture means and the gestures he does explain are obvious ones. There were maybe 3 pieces of information I took down that I did not know before and were useful. Joe Navarro's work on body language signals is much better and are tremendous reads. I have always walked away with a lot more new information after reading Navarro's books and have always been satisfied with my purchase. This book by Morris is a slow read lacking in any applicable discoveries you may be looking for.

A delight !

As always, a Desmond Morris book is a delight
to read.
Caught up in daily life we might forget, who we really
are. So getting a reminder or two doesn't hurt.
In Desmond Morris' world we are the ape that never
grew up. An ape that retained a childlike playfulness.
We play [...] games, called dancing. We play travel games,
called tourism etc. And the essential dream of
modern politics is to ensure freedom and
affluence for all, so that we can play!
And surely you feel like playing while reading his books.
It goes from observations on human religion to
gazing into somebody elses eyes. Checking out their pupil
dilations - when the pupil expand the more emotional
excitement the person feels.
All of which is information you just don't wanna miss.
