Something for everyone

This book was quite intriguing because I've been working out a little more than usual for the past few weeks. After going through the book, I can see that there is a lot of benefits to this "afterburn" that the author talks about in the book.

The books starts with your introduction to the afterburn effect. Your typical questions are answered right away like "what is it?" and "how long does it last?". There is also a glossary in the beginning too which is very helpful for someone new to this. So I liked that.

The book continues with things you can do to maximize this after burn. Specific workouts are included, for beginners and advanced people, along with some safety issues. There is even a running portion of the book, which surprised me.

Overall a great buy, I recommend this to anyone looking to get a better work out.

A lot has already been said about weight loss. I currently run a lot (3 times a week) and always wondered why my weight was still not going down that much.
This book came at the right time and is an eye-opener for understanding the afterburn effect thoroughly.
I like the way how Marc Holden puts different aspects in the right context.

E.g. I have learned that workouts in combination with eating well is important.

As a 'afterburn' novice, I have sufficient and concrete information to start tomorrow. I will for sure re-read it later on as it contains a ton of information.

I must admit, I had no idea what the afterburn effect was before reading this book. but after reading it, I had started to realize that I knew the sensations but never knew how effective it could be. I'm now going to put into place some of the things in this book in my next workouts. Thanks!

Excellent book for Those wishing to learn the art of Perfume

I believe many of the negative reviews for this book are due to a misunderstanding of its purpose. Jean-Claude Ellena is sharing his vision with us. He is letting us into his creative process, so that we might see what being a perfumer means to him. It is like Monet sharing his methods and the thinking processes he uses with us. any artist knows that true art is more than technique.. Understanding that perfumery is not merely technical, but art...art with the intangible, is what is being premised. There is much to learn here. I also believe that this was written in a humble manner. No where did I see arrogance of a preference for all things French. Many of the classic perfumes he mentions here are French...try to name some early classic perfumes that are not. It is a lovely, lyrical book. Other than the charts not showing properly on the Kindle version I bought, it is well translated and I didn't really notice any editing problems. If you are looking for dirt and gossip about the world of perfume, this is not a book for you. If you want to see into the mind of one of the world's greatest perfumers, buy it. You won't be disappointed!

Great at perfume, terrible at writing

I first entered the world of Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermes perfumer, through Chandler Burr's eyes in "The Perfect Scent," and instantly fell in love with this eccentric, sensitive, poetic genius of fragrance. And I was first in line to order Ellena's first book, "Perfume: The Alchemy of Scent." I'm also the first to admit that, after plodding through the first half, Ellena is such an awful writer that he can't keep an admitted perfume freak's attention any longer. I expected (and craved) lovely, lyrical writing and a fascinating education about the creation of perfume for a prestigious fashion house. Instead, I got a set of tedious essays that belie Ellena's intelligence and incredible nose. You can learn more about this man's process, skill and art by taking a whiff of "Un Jardin Sur Le Nil" than opening the pages of this book.

Phenyl ethyl alcohol by any other name would smell more sweet

I don't love this quite as much as I do Ellena's The Diary of a Nose: A Year in the Life of a Parfumeur, which is in many ways a more subjective, personal and philosophical book, incorporating, as diaries do, what the person is doing and the reflections which arise.

This is more of an information giving book - and is as deliciously absorbing, but because it deals more in the laying out of objective facts (as well as subjective experience and interpretation) I was aware, reading from my particular perspective of a few likely errors, and places where I wanted greater precision, explanation and information.

So, for example, in the interesting chapter on extractions of material from plants, he describes in good detail GC (Gas Chromatography), but casually throws in that MS (Mass Spectrometry) is also used, and completely neglects to describe what this is.

In detailing the volume of plant material needed to produce a kilogram of essential oil or aromatic extract, there is surely an error by a factor of 10 between the amount of plant material needed to produce a kg of lavender in the absolute extraction - he states 100 kg - previously stating 20kg to produce a kg of essential oil. What does he mean, which figure is the right one?

And, to someone interested in the plants themselves I'm afraid I had an annoying botanist's hat on when he was describing the bottles in his lab - `Oui! Oui! Monsieur Ellena is this Citrus aurantium var amara flos, fol or fruct - you have merely detailed Bitter Orange. And, more seriously WHICH lavender'. And so it goes on.

There are a few annoying, careless editorial errors, for example, to illustrate a point he is making, Ellena references the text `Below is an odor map' which either never appears, or is another unexplained table which occurred 2 pages earlier

However Ellena is an engaging writer and raconteur - what I really wanted was to be having conversations with him, to say `explain further, s'il vous plait'.

I was most intrigued by his insistence that his objective as a perfumer is not to create an identical synthetic representation of a real odour - say, the essence of damp fig leaves which inspired his Mediterranean garden perfume, - but, like an abstract or impressionist artist, to suggest a flavour, a composition with layered notes that might imaginatively give some sort of `gesture of Mediterranean garden' perhaps with odours that suggest the quality of light, the formal arrangement of the plants in the garden. It's the difference between representation and symbolism, verismo and the abstract which contains the reality but also suggests more than the thing itself

However, one reservation which troubles me, and is not a problem with Ellena's book, rather something untoward in modern perfumery - and that is the cavalier invention of new odour molecules, synthetic chemistry which has never existed before. As Ellena points out, the olfactory cells and their receptors are part of the brain, and odour molecules have powerful effects. Natural chemistry in plants, like the natural chemistry in food, is something which has evolved over millennia, and other species have likewise evolved over millennia to utilise, neutralise, and react with this chemistry. Novel chemistry which never existed outside a lab is different.

Many people have adverse reactions to strong perfume - headaches, allergic rhinitis, and the like. It is, I believe, not the `strength' of the perfume, it is the cocktail of chemistry which is marginally, and in isolation, tested. Paradoxically I have found many such people who have come to use fragrance products and perfumes which are made only from essential oils and absolutes - natural, whole chemistry rather than synthesised odour molecules, whether of chemistry which occurs naturally or `novel' molecules - and who do not experience those allergic reactions with the natural products.

IFRA, the regulatory body of the fragrance industry in the UK sets maximum levels for safe amounts of various odour molecules. Curiously, there are various compounds occurring in essential oils which have been used for centuries safely and effectively - and yet the synthesised isolates are being identified as potential sensitisers and irritants. Somehow, it does not seem to strike home that, for example, synthetic linalool in isolation may be very different from linalool in synergy with other naturally occurring chemistry with a linalool rich essential oil. It all seems to have certain parallels with the changing of a vegetable oil, unsaturated, into a fat solid at room temperature (margarine) and the problems which occur because it is not the chemistry of the molecule, but its shape, which gives rise to problems (trans fats)

Paul Templer spent much of his life in Southern Africa. An author, speaker, philanthropist, businessman, river safari guide, wildlife expert, and family man, Paul has directed his hunger for adventure and nerve for danger in a variety of arenas. As a young adult with an aversion to settling down or getting a proper job, Paul led tourists on a kayak through the swells and challenges of the treacherous and unpredictable Zambezi River. A near-death encounter with a hippopotamus changed everything for Paul and prompted him to form a philosophy that has since reshaped his life and career. Out of Adversity.

I read this book mainly for the reminisce. Having canoed down the middle Zambezi on two separate occasions, and met several ill tempered relatives of the hippo that did for Paul, I came away thinking, "There but for the grace of God went I." Nevertheless, one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had and, hippos and crocs notwithstanding, would do again. Besides the tortuous journey, which the Zambezi takes from source to sea, as described in the book, there is also Paul's long quest for purpose and satisfaction in life itself. Being mauled and disabled to within an inch of one's life by a hippo, would be a life changing experience for most. For Paul it was and, believe it or not, so much for the better.

Great Book by a Great Man

I've had the privilege of having Paul as a coach for the past 6 months. I, actually, happened across his book by accident, as he had not mentioned it. To know the man, then to read his story, makes me incredibly grateful for the privilege.

I'm not much of a reader, having read only a few books cover-to-cover since my college days. However, I couldn't put this one down. It's a riveting, inspiring, terrifying, and gripping read, certainly worthy of anyone's time.

I heartily recommend it!

Richly detailed, masterfully constructed.

The year is 1987. The place, London. Someone in the British Defense Ministry is funneling top secret military information to the Soviet Union. John Preston, a British intelligence agent of considerable skill, is handed the rather daunting task of finding out who is doing it and why.

Meanwhile, in Moscow, a diabolical plot is being hatched to bring Communist rule to the British Isles using the most nefarious of tactics.

Frederick Forsyth masterfully interweaves these two storylines using a narrative style that is detailed to the nth degree. The Fourth Protocal is highly suspenseful and filled with unexpected plot twists. Moreover, Forsyth dares to employ the unusual and somewhat risky technique of using a real life historical figure as one of the main characters....in this case the notorious double agent Kim Philby.

The Fourth Protocol is an extremely engaging, well crafted and meticulously researched cold war thriller that does not disappoint. It ranks right up there among the genre's finest.

It's only my personal opinion.....but I think this is quite possibly Forsyth's best novel. From the seemingly innocent burglary at the start to the suspense filled denouement, it is flawless. If you only ever read one Forsyth novel...make it this one.

Frederick Forsyth's "The Fourth Protocol" written in 1984 before the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. is a classic offering in the political thriller and espionage genre.
A by product of a jewel theft in London is the discovery that sensitive clandestine information has been traitorously pilfered by George Berenson, a member of the British Ministery of Defense.
High ranking agent of the British Secret Service, M15, John Preston has been assigned to plug the leak and evaluate the damage. Exhaustive investigation unearths a plot nurtured through a South African source and eminating from the very top of the Soviet government. British traitor, Harold Philby, now a colonel in the KGB, has inspired a plot approved by the Soviet Secretary General created to topple the reigning British government. A pact to avoid broaching the "fourth protocol" would be violated resulting in the establishment of the hard left, Communist sympathetic Labour Party as the rulers of the British government. The fourth protocol was part of a treaty signed by nuclear powers is avoid certain types of nuclear proliferation.
Forsyth creates a hard biting, chilling thriller that traverses through the highest channels of several governments. Such a scenario is still plausible in the tumultuous political climate existent today.

Author Mike Smith has extensive experience with horses, for he has been teaching riding for over 25 years, owns two horse centers and 50 percent interest in a third. desperately want to rate higher!

I am always looking for a new author to follow or a new book series to read and the blurb for this one sounded good. I truly want to rate it higher but I just can't and that poses a problem for me because, shucks...I really like the plot of this book. I really do!! There is something about the space opera plot which is just plain fun and I continue to read it (I'm about 60% done)though the short-comings are numerous and truly epic at times.
The criticisms other reviewers have posted have all connected with me and I'm not going to belabor them too much but there are things I'd like to post because I hope the author (MIKE SMITH) will read this and try to learn from it.
Mr. Smith: You have been gifted with a great story. I mean this honestly. I also believe you have talent but you desperately need to hire a beta reader and/or a good editor. There are spelling errors which spell-check didn't catch because the word isn't "misspelled" but it's the wrong word...incite when it should be insight etc. Find and fix those...it's not rocket science. A good dictionary or a thesaurus would make a huge difference. Don't make up words to use which aren't real words. You're better than that. Your sentence construction is horrible. Take a remedial English 101 class or whatever will help you with it. Learn grammar and punctuation rules over again, obviously they're missing far too much of the time in this story. Tighten up your dialog, it sounds too stilted. I thought you did a very good job of building the character of Jon Radec until you turn him from a hard-living professional soldier with guts and training and integrity into a blithering blundering half-wit in the presence of not only pretty women but his own father. The character you drew of the professional man wouldn't dissolve into such a wuss. It was like reading the antic of someone who is SERIOUSLY multiple personality affected or maybe just two separate and different people with the same name. A very serious short-coming...
Mr. Smith, I'd volunteer to be a beta reader for you...that's how much I like this story. I can sympathize too, I write and I know how much time and effort goes into getting a story down on paper but it's a waste of time and talent to not do this better. I can hear in your writing that you have talent...sharpen it up and do it right the next time. I'll be waiting!

I wanted to like this book. The premise and liner notes were indicative of something I tend to like. But I had to force myself to read to the end. The story lines and plot elements were just not plausible.

Example: You are the sole remaining bodyguard of the only heir of the now assassinated emperor following an apparent coup d'etat. You have no idea what military units you can trust. You don't know who might be looking for you and your famous protectee. So, naturally, you take her to dinner at one of the most upscale restaurant's on the backwater planer you are on (where you grew up), and then take her dancing at a dive bar, where you, naturally, run into old high school enemies who are going to now mess you up, years later.

Add in editing errors such as "there" being used instead of "their" (repeatedly) and just wasn't an engaging read.

A Classic Greek Tragic Tale

The author builds a highly effective plot line about a trusted warrior that does his duty day after day at great personal cost. I enjoyed the story and readers who like character driven plots with lots of action will too. This is a military sci-fi story with a love interest which draws the reader in as you come to care about the principal players. No spoilers from me. Do you want fighter combat, station assaults, intrigue and assassination attempts, a collapsing empire? If yes, select for purchase. Military Sci-Fi is my primary reading pleasure and this is a keeper within the category.
